Fire Safe Council

Introduction:

A recognized leader in the state, the Inter-Canyon Fire Safe Council is dedicated to educating residents on the danger of fire. The FSC organizes regular “chipper” days during which residents can recycle hazardous brush removed from their property; set up booths at local fairs; invite residents to informational seminars on fire protection; distributes fire prevention information and coordinates with local authorities. Each year, more than 400 residents participate in council activities.

Lead by Mary Schreiber, the Fire Safe Council meets monthly and consists of canyon residents, local volunteer firefighters, employees of the Orange County Fire Authority, US Forest Service and the O.C. Sherriff’s Department.

Canyon Watch

Canyon Watch consists of 63 volunteers from Silverado, Modjeska and Trabuco canyons who patrol their neighborhoods during high risk circumstances, such as Santa Ana winds or dangerous fire conditions. Easily identifiable by their green vests and marked vehicles, Canyon Watch volunteers patrol in pairs on two-hour shifts. They look for arsonists, people smoking, and other potential hazards. They also help during incidents such as power outages and car accidents. They patrol every Fourth of July.

Canyon Watch members communicate via GMRS radios; volunteers who receive two hours of training can use the radios. Signals are transmitted by repeaters in each of the canyons. Non-Canyon Watch members can find out what’s happening during patrols by tuning into Channel 16 or 20 on a hand-held radio (FRS or Family Radio Service). Canyon Watch also helps with parking at large community events such as the Treehuggers Ball and the annual Country Fair.
