Santiago Fire
The Santiago Fire was an intentionally started wildfire that originated near Santiago Canyon Road at the border of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon at 5:55 p.m. on October 21, 2007, and burned approximately 28,445 acres. The flames threatened roughly 750 homes located throughout canyons in the area, including both Santiago and Silverado Canyon, Live Oak Canyon, Holy Jim Canyon, Modjeska Canyon, and Trabuco Canyon, among others. Twelve houses were destroyed in Santiago Canyon. The fire became fully contained on November 9, 2007.
The Inter-Canyon League received and was asked to administer more than one million dollars in donations to assist fire victims, primarily canyon residents who lost their homes. To ensure funds were distributed in accordance with the needs, the ICL established an advisory committee known as the Santiago Fire Relief Committee that reviewed resident applications and made award recommendations to the Board of Directors.
Based on the committee’s input and documentation received, more than $ 890,000 was awarded to victims of this devastating fire. The remaining funds, while still managed by the ICL were placed in reserve for future community needs that may occur as a result such as mudslides, debris flows, etc.
